Defining the Public Agenda and Strengthening Constituencies for Peace and Reform in Nepal

Project Summary

This project is designed to resolve the effects of conflict on Nepali women and children through media activism. The project is planned to employ various forms of mass media to expose the real situation of the women and children vis-à-vis the conflict. It is expected that this will not only make the people aware about the dire miseries of the women and children but also inspire them to take affirmative actions to resolve the miseries. Secondly, the project aims to create pressure on the groups who are directly involved in the power game, namely, the government, security forces, the rebel group and parliamentary parties. At present, both the government forces and the rebel group are dreadfully violating the human rights and with impunity. The most significant aspect of the project is that it will document the evidences of the barbarous and inhuman atrocities committed by the state, the rebel group and others. Hopefully, the documentation will help punish the guilty in the future, which is necessary to build a nation based on the principles of justice and fundamental rights.

Objectives

Obviously, the main goal of the project must be resolving the conflict and restoring peace. But the present state of affairs clearly indicates that this is not likely to happen in near future. In fact, there are several underlying causes behind the outburst of the present conflict. Unless the underlying causes are carefully dealt with, the conflict will not end. In such situation, we can only work to limit the effects of conflict within the warring groups. Ironically, the most affected people by the conflict are not the warring groups but women and children who are innocent or are not directly involved in the war.

Thus, the major objective of the project is to nullify the adverse effects of the conflict on women and children through media activism. Other objectives are as follows:

-     to expose the state of women and children in relation to the conflict through various means of mass media;

-     to inform people about the atrocities committed against women and children so that they are inspired to take affirmative actions against the guilty;

    to create pressure on the conflicting parties in order to make them more responsible and careful in their actions; and

-    to provide factual documents of the events related to women and children, and conflict for the people in general and human rights activists, women activists and media personnel in particular.

In order to achieve the above objectives the following activities are planned to execute.

·         Activity 1. Establishment of the Information and Documentation Section

·         Activity 2. Literature Review and Research

·         Activity 3. Preparation and Publication of Investigative Reporting/Features

·         Activity 4. Production and Broadcast of Radio Programs

·         Activity 5. Production and Broadcast of TV Documentaries
