Some of the research and surveys completed by ASMITA are: The First Generation of the 21st Century: How Ready are They to Face the Challenges of the New Age?, 1996 ; Secondary Students: Let Thousands Kits Fly, 1995; The Pains and Pleasure of Being a Wife, 1994; Which Party's Government Do the Women Voters Want?, Per-election Survey 1994; Women in Favor of Inter-caste Marriage, 1994; The New World of Men, Men in the New World, 1994; Efforts to Prevent Trafficking in Women and Girls: A Pre-Study for Media Activism, 1998.

Report on Women & Girls' Trafficking

Media Activism for Prevention of
Trafficking in Women and Girls in Nepal

Brief/Nepal

The issue of trafficking in women and girls in Nepal has been wrongfully presented by the media in most of the cases. Even the findings of the research and studies on the issue are not justifiable. Therefore ASMITA decided to contribute for the prevention of trafficking in women and girls in Nepal through media activism. Accordingly, a program was designed for two phases.

The first phase program was the research namely Efforts to Prevent Trafficking in Women and Girls: A Pre-Study for Media Activism, 1998. That literature review phase has already been completed. After the completion of the first phase, the program team became aware of the incorrectly illustrated present situation of the trafficking in Nepal and South Asia and found many things lacking in previous studies and research as well as in media coverage and legal and policy related provisions. In this condition, it is believed that the first phase report will be more meaningful if it is followed by the second phase of media activism and extensive research on the issue of trafficking.

Till when will violence against women last

Just as long as silence lasts

The first phase research had been supported by the Action Aid Nepal, Oxfam Nepal, Plan International Nepal, Save the Children UK, Nepal office and Save the Children Japan, Nepal Office.

The second phase program will shift the focus of study. In the course of first phase study, it was clearly seen that most of the researches, studies and media coverage in Nepal had been mainly focused on the victims, supply centers, trafficking routes and the process of taking away the victims from the supply center to the demand center. So the second phase program will endeavor to probe into the world of victimizers (i.e., brothel keepers, brokers and pimps). as far as the demand exists, there will be supply. It will study the nature of the demand center (sex market) in order to find out the ways to stop its growth. Most of the times, the culprits escape from the punishment in the absence of evidence or taking advantage of the loopholes in the laws. This phase will study the court case (which is the most ignored topic by the media) and reveal the weaknesses of laws and law implementing bodies. In sum, this phase will take the issue of trafficking in a holistic manner rather than in fractions, and use all channels of the media to make it a national issue.

The main objective of the second phase is to support the national campaign for the prevention of trafficking in women and girls in Nepal through various channels of the media. Main procedure of the study is:

i) to utilize all means and ways of the media, i.e., print, audio and audio-visual media for disseminating the information and findings accumulated after field and evidence investigation;

ii) to find out and collect main hindrances and factors which are responsible for the existence and promotion of the trafficking; and

iii) to study the efforts for providing relief and support to the victims of trafficking as well as the awareness and other activities of different social organizations to reduce the magnitude of the problem, and offer required suggestions.

This program is extremely important not only for our organization, but since trafficking is a national problem, it must be addressed by each individual and institution. So the organization is looking for the resources to conduct the second phase program which will be the significant assistance from media side to make Government's Action Plan against trafficking in women and girls successful.
