Journalism
Before talking about Asmita's place in Nepali journalism, it would be
better to explain something about the media situation in Nepal. In fact,
the Nepali media is in the control of the country's socio-economic power
centers. Such power centers are dominated by particular class, castes and
gender (i.e., male). Therefore, the selection of a news, its presentation
and propagation are influenced by interest of the dominant group.

The Nepali
media exhaustively concentrates on political issues, very little space is
given for other various important subjects. The situation is even worse,
for the case of women. Very few materials are produced on issues of gender
equality and women's human rights. Wrongful projection and stereotyped
images of women in media have been great obstacles in the path of women's
empowerment and independence.
Obviously, the alternative media has been developed to cover what has
been left by the mainstream media. The main aim of the alternative media
is to present real facts about powerless groups like women. The
alternative media materials are playing a remarkable role in informing and
educating people, and gradually influencing the mainstream media too. |
