Training

ASMITA arranges and conducts training on gender perspective in journalism which is aimed to produce a gender-conscious work force in the media sector. Since the Beijing Conference (1995) also has given emphasis on increasing the participation of women in the media and the right presentation of women in it, the concept of  the training was inspired and developed following the guidance of the Conference. There are two major objectives of  conducting training. Firstly its main objective is to provide writing skills for women journalists; secondly we would like to provide them training so that they could produce gender sensitive materials in media.

Journalist Training

ASMITA previously planned to conduct such training of one week duration in the five development regions of the country. It has already conducted such training in Palpa (Western Development Region), Ilam (Eastern Development Region) and Surkhet (Mid-western and Far-western Development Regions combined). Those three trainings altogether included 54 working journalists (44 women and 10 men ) who came from different parts of the country. The trainees had highly appreciated the contents and overall training.

Brief/Nepal

Most of the trainees have suggested that such training is necessary for the editors and publishers also. Those trainings had been launched by the financial support of World Association of Christian Community , UK and Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund for University  Women, USA.

In the present situation of Nepal, such type of trainings on Gender Perspective in Journalism must be launched continuously through the country at least for five years. Only after this effort, certain number of women journalists might come in the media sector. Similarly certain number of gender sensitive workforce might be produced and they might significantly contribute to make the media free of gender biases.  Therefore, ASMITA would like to work with funding groups in partnership in this area too.
