What do ASMITA means ?

ASMITA literally means Identity of women. It was established in 1988 as a non-profitable, non-political and non-governmental organization by a nucleus of young enthusiastic women journalists. Its general  objectives is to fulfill the existing gap in participation, representation and access to media of women. It is committed to find new ways and direction s for women's progress.

Major aim

Its major aim is to active participation of more women in the media. ASMITA is the one and only feminist alternative media organization in the country, and its functions as a pressure group for the advancement of women through media activism.

Goal 

The prime target of ASMITA is to establish a well-equipped and self-reliant feminist alternative media organization for continuous advocacy of women's human right, gender equality and advance of women.

In order to achieve its pre-set objectives, ASMITA has been involved in the following activities :

- Publishing Asmita Feminist Magazine;
- Publishing Literacy Supports materials;
- Maintaining inforamtion & Documentation section

Objectives

ASMITA has set forth the following objectives:

- To publish a specalised magazine, newspaper, books, booklets, anthologies, year books etc on women issues for educated women  and men.

- To establish a feature service for producing features, investigative reporting, depth reporting on contemporary women's issues.

- To support the country's literacy campaign for women by publishing educative materials for rural women.

- To produce an audio-visual programs on women's and gender issues.

- To conduct various research on contemporary women's issues.

- To conduct a media watch project by analyzing and monitoring the presentation of women in the media.

- To establish an information and documentation service of published materials on women's studies.

- To maintain network with related national and international media organizations and exhange information.

- To provide training on gender perspective in journalism in order to produce a skilled gender-conscious work force in the field of media.

- To provide consultancies in the sector of  feminist alternative media.

Organizational potentiality

ASMITA is managed by a Board (of member) consisting of five members. All of them are professionals having expertise in various fields. The board provides directorship and policy guidelines to the institution and also contributes professionally in areas of their interest and expertise.

ASMITA staff includes professionals experienced in journalism, print media, publication, research, administration and management. Moreover, ASMITA employs proffessionals from outside the organization on short and medium term basis, when needed.
