Time to change in Action

During those last 25 years after the International Women’s Year, there have been declared and adopted series of the international conventions and conferences for the establishment of civic and just world society.  CRC, CEDAW, Vienna Human Rights Conference, ICPD Cairo Conference, Copenhagen Social Summit, Beijing Conference are some of the examples in this process.

In these efforts, the rights and concerns of women have been well documented and ensured. In this sense, the last quarter of 20th century was remarked as the achievable period for the ensurement of women’s right. Required action plans and programs for the women empowerment and equality have been well planned in this time.

"Don't drop out your daughter from school...

Give her a chance to complete it."

Now the time has changed and we have already entered into 21 century. As the paper work is already done, now it is the time to implement these commitments into action. Though most of the governments throughout the world sign and display their agreement to such conventions, yet very few of them take action seriously on the issues. Therefore, media and other bodies of civic society of the concerned country should continuously create pressure and launch advocacy campaigns to make the government implement their signed agreements.

In this context, the role of the organizations like ASMITA should be more powerful and strong since it has to function as the media pressure group for the proper implementation of the signed commitments regarding women’s human right and empowerment. Similarly its another important function is to raise mass awareness on women related issues so that it can ultimately contribute to develop the just, gender bias and violence free society. For this, the organization has to launch diverse programs. Diversification in the activities of ASMITA is also the result of performing the same responsibilities.
